February 7, 2010 AM: “What Kind of People Ought You to Be?”

"But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness." (II Peter 3:10-13)

Peter is writing his last letter. He tells his beloved brethren that he will be dying soon (1:13-14). He assures them once more that the gospel about Jesus is based on solid evidence, not clever fiction (1:16-18). This is in stark contrast to the false teachers who were circulating fantastic claims and doctrines aimed only at personal profit (2:1-22), and which promotes immorality and abandoning of the faith. He emphasizes  the coming again of the Lord, which was being denied by these false teachers (3:1-9). He then asks his readers, "Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?" If we really, REALLY believe the Lord Jesus is coming back, and that it may be at any time, it will change the way we live! Click the blue button to hear our message for today.
